What is St George English Flag?
“Saint George, a widely popular is known as the “Warrior Saint” during the 3rd Crusade. The red cross in particular red and white crosses were chosen to identify the French and English troops in the “Kings’ Crusade”. “George’s Cross” became a recognizable symbol of the crusader from about 1190, and in the 13th century it came to be used as flag or emblem by numerous leaders or polities who wanted to associate themselves with the crusades.
The association of the red-on-white cross with the Saint is believed to arises in Genoa, Italy which had adopted the flag and George as their patron saint in the 12th century. A vexillum beati Georgii is mentioned in the Genovese annals under the year 1198, referring to a red flag with a depiction of St. George and the dragon.
The emblems association with England dates back to the it Middle Ages, however the flag has no “official” status in the UK. However, since the 1990’s it has been growing in popularity with its use becoming common in major UK sporting events (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_England).”
